Paris Police Find Explosives at Store

PARIS (AP) -- Police acting on a warning Tuesday found a bundle of dynamite inside a Paris department store at the height of the Christmas season, and a group demanding that France withdraw from Afghanistan claimed responsibility.

Bomb hoax not a hoax

Why would a seasoned trooper, a bomb tech, take a suspected explosive device into a bank? It’s not only stupid, it goes against procedure.

Hakim is indeed a Muslim name, one of the 99 names of Allah. Used in the Middle East and in Indonesia.

An undated photograph provided by the Oregon State Police shows Senior Trooper William Hakim of the Oregon State Police. Hakim, 51, was one of two people killed Friday afternoon, Dec. 12, 2008, in a bomb explosion at a bank in Oregon.

“Lt. Sheila Lorance of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the lead agency in the case, did not have an explanation Sunday for why the officers took the bomb into the bank.”

“Hakim” means "wise or intelligent" in English. In fact, an Islamic doctor and physician were traditionally referred to as a Hakim. The name is also conferred upon a boy especially in Islamic culture. The word has an Arabic origin.

It is pronounced as hah-KEEM. Hakim is one of the 99 names of Allah. Another popular variant of the name Hakim is "Hakeem." The retired, eminent basketball player Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the famous personalities bearing this respected name. Of late the popularity of this traditional name has dwindled as a first name in favor of other modern names. However the surname "Hakim" continues to hold its forte as one of the dominant surnames in the Muslim tradition.”

Ore. bank blast kills police officer, bomb expert

WOODBURN, Ore. (AP) -- A bomb explosion at a bank killed both a police officer and a state bomb disposal technician, and state police do not have any suspects, officials said Saturday.

"That person is dangerous and needs to be found as soon as possible," said Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

The explosion occurred Friday afternoon at a West Coast Bank branch office in the agricultural town of Woodburn, which is nearly 30 miles south of Portland.

Police went to check on a telephoned bomb threat received by a Wells Fargo branch bank in the center of town and found a suspicious device, but that device was determined to be harmless. But police said the investigation there led them to the nearby West Coast office where the bomb was found.

Police wouldn't discuss a possible motive for the bombing. Hastings said he didn't know of any grudges against the West Coast Bank, a statement echoed by West Coast Bank President and CEO Robert Sznewajs.

"We're not aware of anything," Sznewajs said.

Woodburn police Capt. Tom Tennant and state Senior Trooper William Hakim, both 51, died at the scene. Tennant was a 28-year veteran of the Woodburn police department, and Hakim, a bomb technician, had been with the force for 11 years.

Woodburn police Chief Scott Russell, 46, was injured and in stable but critical condition at a Portland hospital. He has been with the police department for 20 years.

State police said the inside of the bank was extensively damaged, and a female employee was treated at a hospital and released. Another bank employee was uninjured.

Hastings declined to describe the bomb in detail but indicated it was powerful.

A bank employee found the bomb in bushes outside the bank, and it exploded after officers took it inside.

Hastings said he did not know why the officers took the bomb inside.
Police sealed the area around the bank, and it remained closed Saturday. "There's no indication of further devices," Hastings said.

Federal authorities said Saturday they were offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
Woodburn has a population of about 21,000

Meet Britain's new army of young eco warriors

While governments talk of climate change, a growing band of young, committed environmentalists is emerging in the UK. The storming of Stansted was just the beginning
Tracy McVeigh
The Observer, Sunday 14 December 2008
They are young, smart, organised, committed and, if they are allowed to have their way, they would like to save the world. No longer is an environmentalist a geeky elderly man in socks and sandals or a dreadlocked traveller in a rainbow jumper. Britain's new vanguard of eco-warriors are predominantly in their twenties, they are articulate and knowledgeable and techno-aware.

Doomsday: U.S. report warns of 'strategic shock' leading to massive unrest
WASHINGTON — The United States could be sleep-walking into its next crisis, a military report said. The report by the U.S. Army War College's Strategic Institute, said that a defense community paralyzed by conventional thinking could be unprepared to help the United States cope with a series of unexpected crises that would rival the Al Qaida strikes in 2001, termed a "strategic shock."

The report cited the prospect of the collapse of a nuclear state leading to massive unrest in the United States.

Bush shoe incident catches Secret Service flatfooted
By Greg Gordon and Adam Ashton

Although the Secret Service put everyone who attended President George W. Bush's Baghdad news conference through several layers of security Sunday, the agency appeared to be caught off guard when an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the president.

The present Analyst-Network website has as a main aim to inform a specialized and enlightened audience of the "undercover" nature of events within the global security & intelligence sector.

In this case, an alternative point of view is going to be presented which derives from a careful analysis and observation of the riots in Greece and reliable information streaming from the domestic security circles.

For obvious reasons, matters concerning operational or intelligence procedures will not be mentioned or commented.

Islamabad : Pakistani authorities and residents of Ajmal Amir Iman's village have apparently launched efforts to cover up their links with the lone gunman arrested for the Mumbai terror attacks, days after his father admitted that the young man as shown by the media was his son.
Pakistani security and intelligence agencies have deployed a large number of personnel in plainclothes at Faridkot in Okara district of Punjab province, from where Ajmal hails, with journalists visiting the area having to face angry protests.

New Delhi : Investigation into the Mumbai terror attack have moved a step forward with intelligence agencies confirming that the Pakistani “handlers” whom the terrorists telephoned several times during the siege in the Taj Mahal Hotel and Nariman House were indeed top operatives of the Lashkar-e-Toiba Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and Yusuf Muzammil.

Lord's Resistance Army uses truce to rearm and spread fear in Uganda
Once seen as a ragtag brigade, the guerrilla force that claims divine leadership is organised and ready to renew fighting

For eight days Raymond Kpiolebeyo was marched at gunpoint through the Congolese jungle, not knowing whether he would live or die. At night he slept with eight other prisoners, pinned under a plastic sheet weighted down with bags and stones to prevent escape. Their sweat condensed on the sheeting, inches above their faces, before dripping back and turning their plastic prison into a stinking, choking sauna.
He was a prisoner of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a band of pitiless commanders and their brutalised child soldiers. “They told us that if one of us tried to escape we would all be shot,” said Raymond, 28, a teacher from Doruma, close to the border with southern Sudan.

He had been captured by a raiding party looking for porters, sex slaves and soldiers to continue the LRA's 20-year struggle to overthrow the Ugandan Government.

In Colombia, they call him Captain Nemo
Reporting from Tumaco, Colombia -- Squat, bull-necked and sullen-looking, Enrique Portocarrero hardly seems a dashing character out of a Jules Verne science fiction novel. But law enforcement officers here have dubbed him "Captain Nemo," after the dark genius of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

They say the 45-year-old has designed and built as many as 20 fiberglass submarines, strange vessels with the look of sea creatures, for drug traffickers to haul cocaine from this area of southern Colombia to Central America and Mexico.

Of course it is criminal...AND there oughta be a law against it.

Tunisian judicial sources say that he joined the Islamic Tendency Movement, now called Ennahdha, in the 1980s. In 1986, he created the Tunisian Islamic Front, which he describes as “a non-violent political party founded . . . to oppose the one-party state in Tunisia and to seek change through peaceful means”.

ID Rules To Change For Canada CrossingsDHS Defies Congress By Going Forward Now

Defying Congress, the Department of Homeland Security is pushing to tighten identification requirements at U.S. land borders starting Jan. 31, when it no longer will allow Americans or Canadians to enter the country by presenting a driver's license or declaring their citizenship.

The change is expected to worsen travel delays and backups along the U.S.-Canada border, which recorded 72 million crossings in 2007. The U.S.-Mexico border is even busier, with 226 million crossings, but non-citizens already need extra documentation to enter the United States there.

Unanswered questions about a ‘man of peace’ on Interpol list
The TV chief denies all links to terrorism but will not discuss his first five years in Britain

The Islam Channel founded and run by Mohamed Ali Harrath, who is wanted by Interpol, is watched by 59 per cent of Britain’s 1.6 million Muslims, according to government research disclosed to The Times.

As a senior executive of a television channel in Britain – it has offices in the City of London and studios in the West End – Mr Harrath has potential influence over an important section of the community. He insists that he is a man of peace, but questions remain about his past because he and the political movement that he founded have attracted attention from the authorities in several countries.

Calls in Iran to Topple Egyptian, Saudi Regimes

Iran's attacks and accusations against Egypt and Saudi Arabia have recently intensified. In early December, Iran's leading conservative government dailies Kayhan and Jomhouri-ye Eslami accused the Egyptian and Saudi regimes of treason, and called on their peoples to topple their regimes.

Kayhan editor Hossein Shariatmadari, who is close to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, praised Khaled Islambouli, the assassin of the late Egyptian president Anwar Al-Sadat, and called to follow his example. At the same time, student demonstrations were held in Tehran, during which protesters called for killing Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and threw firebombs at the Egyptian interest office.

Indications and Warnings of Imminent Islamic Terrorism
By Sean Osborne, Associate Director

For much of the fall season of 2008 all of us the the Northeast Intelligence Network, and those of you who follow our reports, probably could not help but notice a rather significant increase in the postings coming from jihadist website forums which were seized upon as potential Indications and Warnings (IW) precursors to Islamic terrorist strikes. Just as quickly as those jihadi posts popped up like a crocus in early spring... they stopped cold with a finality and suddenness that was also a cause of significant concern.

Not only did the posts cease in this manner, but the primary jihadi websites themselves began disappearing or going offline. Some believe, as I do, that this was due to inter-Islamic fratricide, a cyber war between the Shi'a and Sunni jihadists. We at NEIN were assured by those "in the know" that the United States governments counter-terrorist efforts were not the cause of this.

Pak scientists offered Osama nukes before 9/11: BookDecember 14, 2008 21:56 ISTLast Updated: December 14, 2008 21:59 IST

Barely a month before the 9/11 terror attacks, two Pakistani nuclear scientists, said to be close to disgraced Abdul Qadeer Khan, met up with al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and offered to supply him with atomic weapons, according to a newly released book.

Chaudiri Abdul Majeed and Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood, who held a series of senior posts in Pakistani nuke programme, went to Taliban [Images] headquarters in Kandahar in mid-August 2001 and spent three days with bin Laden who was keen on acquiring weapons of mass destruction, the book says.
